Sea otters were mainly located on the southern tip of Valmor in planet Arda 10,000,000 years ago. The biome then was Chaparral biome. They were usually found in the coast/shore of Valmor. They were closely related beavers. They would go into the water for a short time but besides that, they loved being on land and playing with sticks. Their fur was very thin. They had bigger claws and palms to be able to break sticks and cut them. They would eat worms.
After a while of it being way to hot, 40 C (104 F), they started being more and more in the Golf of Valmor and Southern Ocean to cool off. After a couple of years, they were mostly found in the water more than ashore. They’re fur started to thicken and since they didn’t want to go out of the water much into the beating hot sun, they started finding food in the ocean to eat as in clams and sea urchins.
Now, 10 million years later, adapted to a deciduous biome. The average temperature is 50 degrees (F). Although some sea otters didn’t make it since they stayed more on land than with the others in water and their fur wasn’t thick enough to keep them warm, there were still many in which survive and still exist to this day. Their population has decreased but in a couple of years, it should increase. Now the otters aren’t related to the beavers in any sense. They are more closely related to weasels and badgers. They’re fur is thick enough where they are warm at all hours of the day no matter how cold it is outside or in the water.

Sea otters had developed claws. With these claws, they are able to hunt their prey. If they are in shells or hidden somewhere, they are more capable to getting it open to eat it.

Sea otters have also developed thick fur. The thick fur is to help them keep warm at all times. It traps their body so they won't ever feel to cold.
The image below is a timeline of the evolution on sea otters from 10 million years ago to present day.
The evolution
The sea otter has evolved a lot through out the years in the planet of Arda. It went from living in the tip of Valmor about 10,000,000 years ago where the biome was Chaparral to a deciduous biome. They first began with having thin fur and paws, being closely related to beavers. As the years passed on, they saw how the environment was changing as well as the animals in that community. Throughout the years, they slowly started to grow thicker fur that didn't bother them during the hot days and kept their body heat in. They also slolwy started to grow paws with small claws. The claws were evolved so it would be easier for them to break open shells or stuff alike to help them get food quicker.
The sea otter was originally called "lake otter" because they would be in lakes and rivers. In the chaparral biome, it would be extremely hot. The estimate temperature on an average day would be about 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it was to hot, they lake otters had thin fur so that they wouldn't over heat and die. Lake otters would have small paws. They spend half of their time on land so they didn't really need claws to hunt on prey.
It is a very good thing that the sea otters had evolved into the thick furred and claws because if they hadn't they would have probably wiped out in their population. They wouldn't be able to control and keep their body warmth the same. Also since the otters were starting tot spend more time in the ocean, they needed new ways to hunt for food and get it open for it to be edible. e
Throughout the many million years, the lake otter has evolved into the present day sea otter. Not every species that was set out to evolved the same made it to today. The Bevetter was the last species with thin fur to live. Since the temperatures in the biome where changing to a deciduous biome, cold , 60 degrees Fahrenheit, they couldn't grow out the fur to help them protect themselves from the cold winter. Besides the Bevetter, the Coast Side Otter and the C.R. otter where the other type of otters that did not have thick fur at all or claws.
