Baby sea otters spend up to their first year of life laying on their mother's stomach. This is because they hold a strong bond together and the baby isn't so ready to be let go out into the open so quickly.
Scientific Name: Enhydra Lutis
Life Spam: Live up to 23 years in the wild
Height/Weight: Grows up to 4 feet tall ; Males weigh up to 65 lbs. ; Females weigh up to 45 lbs.
Biome In: Marine
Sea otters are carnivores. They eat sea urchins, crabs, squids, octopuses, fish, snails, and about 40 other marine species. In some places, sea otters are omnivores because they also eat seaweed and other aquatic plants. Everyday, sea otters have to eat up to 25% of their weight per day to keep their metabolism high.
Found/Location: There is a high population of sea otters on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in North America and Asia including Japan, Alaska, Britain, Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Baja Cali, and all of California.
Importance/Role: Sea otters are important to coastal ecosystem because they help reduce the levels of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (Defenders of wildlife.) Kelp takes in all the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Sea urchins feed on kelp which eliminates them and sea otters then feed on the sea urchins. Sea otters prefer to be in places where there is a lot of kelp.
Protection Status: Threatened
~The organisation S.O .A.W. (sea otter awareness week) have an annual week in September (22nd- 28th) to try and raise awareness.
~The otterproject.org also collaborates with them but also everyday, not just otters week.

Sea urchins are the sea otters main prey. Other things they prey on are:
~crabs
~squids
~octopuses
~fish
~snail
and about 40 other marine species.

Sea otters have many predators. The three main predators are:
~Sharks
~Human
~Killer Whales

~Human
~Killer Whales
Behavior: Playful. Most people see them as nice, cute, cuddly creatures but that is not always the case. There are times where they can be very aggressive. They can attack and bite. Even when the sea otters are playing around, they find "biting" as a way of playing.

The kelp is the producer. It produces energy from the sun. The sea urchins, mussels, calms, and fish would be a primary consumer. Sea otters would be the secondary consumers while killer whales would be the tertiary consumer. The sea otters succession would be a climax community.
Human impact
Above are pictures of water pollution that greatly effect the sea otter's community. All of these are because of human activity. Some examples of what humans may do that affect the marine ecosystem are: fishing nets (get trapped in the net and not being able to get out or suffocating,) oil spills (oil get son their fur and makes it hard for it to keep them warm to may hold them back on being able to swim away from predators,) boat propellers, water pollution (throwing cans and waste into the water,) and such so on. These things can kill the species and that's that the sea otters are already threatened of extinction.
